Opening Your POS After Securing the Tablet Overnight
To help prevent theft, many shops store or hide the POS tablet after closing. Follow the steps below each morning to safely and quickly get your system back up and ready for service.
Step 1: Retrieve and Inspect the Tablet
- Remove the tablet from its secure storage location.
- Check for any visible damage.
- Confirm the charging cable and power source are working properly.
If the battery is low, plug the tablet in immediately before continuing.
Step 2: Power On the Tablet
- Hold the power button until the screen turns on.
Allow the device a moment to reconnect to Wi-Fi.
Step 3: Confirm Internet Connection
- Check that the tablet is connected to your store’s Wi-Fi.
- If Wi-Fi does not reconnect automatically, open device settings and manually select the correct network.
A stable connection is required for orders, payments, and syncing.
Step 4: Launch the Joe POS App
- Open the Joe POS app from the home screen.
- Go to Settings --> Payment Device Settings --> Check Status
- If status is indicating "Discovering" simply prop it off the base and re-prop it back on the case
Step 5: Check Hardware Connections
Before opening for customers, confirm:
- Card reader is connected and powered on.
- Receipt printer is on and has paper.
- Cash drawer is connected.
- Customer-facing screen (if applicable) is powered on and paired.
If using Tap to Pay, confirm it is enabled and ready.
Step 6: Verify Menu & Order Flow
- Start a test order.
- Confirm items load properly.
- Cancel the test order before proceeding.
This ensures the system is fully synced and ready for service.
Step 7: Begin Your Shift
Once everything is connected and functioning:
- Log into your shift (if applicable).
- Ensure the register screen is on the main menu.
- You’re ready to take orders.
Troubleshooting Tips
If something is not working:
- Restart the tablet.
- Restart the card reader.
- Confirm Wi-Fi connection.
- Reach out to support if issues persist.
Starting the day with a quick system check prevents delays during peak morning rush and keeps service smooth.
Your POS should be fully operational before the first customer walks in.
