Split payments allow customers to use more than one payment method in a single transaction — a common need in coffee shops where gift card and loyalty balances are frequently used. This feature makes it easy to process a gift card with a partial balance or combine multiple payment types (e.g., store balance and cash).
Key Things to Know
- Only one loyalty customer can use their loyalty balance per transaction.
- Tip selection must happen before splitting a payment.
- The total transaction is processed as one sale.
- Only one receipt is printed, even if multiple payment methods are used.
- For credit/debit card splits, a minimum transfer amount of $0.50 is required.
Store Balance + Cash Split
- Ask the customer to enter their phone number on the customer-facing screen.
- At checkout, calculate the difference between the store balance and the total amount.
- Tap Load Funds and upload the difference in cash to the customer’s balance.
- This ensures the customer has enough balance to cover the full transaction.
- Return to the checkout screen and complete the sale using Pay with Balance.
Standard Split Payment
- On the payment screen, select Split as the payment method.
- Tap Split #1 and enter the amount the customer wants to pay.
- Choose the payment method (e.g., Credit Card, Gift Card, Loyalty Balance).
- Repeat steps 2–3 for additional splits (Split #2, Split #3, etc.).
Gift Card Split
If a customer’s gift card doesn’t have enough funds:
- Select Gift Card and swipe the card.
- A pop-up will display the available balance and prompt to continue with a split payment.
- The system will:
- Pre-fill the gift card balance under Split #1.
- Pre-select the gift card as the payment method.
- Prompt you to confirm and pay.
- The remaining balance will appear under Split #2, where you can choose another payment method (e.g., cash, credit card) to complete the transaction.
Refunds for Split Payments
Finding the Order:
- Orders with split payments display “Multiple Payments” under the payment method.
Full Refund:
- When refunding 100% of the order, the system automatically allocates the refund back to each original payment method.
- Partial Refund:
- Partial refunds can only be issued to Cash or Loyalty Balance.
- If the order isn’t linked to a customer account, partial refunds can only be issued as cash.
