What's new, improved, and fixed in this release.

RELEASE
v3.21
|
PREVIOUS
v3.20
|
APPLIES TO
Barista, Patron & Kiosk devices
|
ACTION NEEDED
None — auto-updates
|
Checkout gets smoother — tipping now comes before the loyalty prompt, and cash orders skip tipping entirely. Reader software updates now work on your patron-facing tablet and Kiosk, not just the barista device. Tap to Pay has been retired. Plus a long list of fixes to cash payments, loyalty claims, and card reader reliability.
The NFC tap-to-pay flow has been removed from the app. Tap-to-pay is no longer available as a payment method and new tap-to-pay setups can't be created. Payment case (M2) readers are unaffected and continue to work normally — your patron-facing reader status is now based on the payment case rather than NFC availability.
✨ What's New
New capabilities and flow changes you and your team will notice.
Checkout & Payments
- Tipping now comes before the loyalty points prompt. In the patron checkout flow, the tip screen appears ahead of the Loyalty Points claim screen on both two-screen and single-screen setups. If a patron hasn't added their phone number yet, they're asked to tip first, then to claim points.
- Cash orders skip tipping automatically. When a patron pays with cash, the tipping screen no longer appears — a faster, cleaner cash checkout.
- Gift card payments go straight to the gift card screen. Choosing to pay with a gift card now surfaces the gift card option immediately instead of routing through the standard payment screen first.
Card Reader Software Updates
-
Reader updates now work on the patron-facing tablet and Kiosk. Previously only the barista device could install reader software updates. Now both required and optional updates are supported across your hardware:
- — On the patron-facing tablet, the barista pushes the update to the device. A yellow banner appears while the update installs after the reader connects.
- — On the Kiosk, required updates install directly with no prompts. Optional updates are available through "Check for updates."
- "Check for update" works from either device. You can start an update from the patron-facing device directly, or from the barista device via Payment Device Settings — the barista sees the same styled dialog either way. A pending update also survives closing the barista app; the patron-facing device re-reports once the barista screen is back up.
- Optional update prompts are limited to once a day. Instead of prompting on every reader connection, baristas now see an optional-update reminder at most once per 24 hours for a given reader and firmware version. A brand-new firmware version still notifies right away, and if an install fails the prompt returns rather than going quiet for the rest of the day.
Optional reader update prompts can now be suppressed for specific stores without changing anything for everyone else. If prompts are disruptive during service at one of your locations, let Support know and we can quiet them for that store.
Behind the scenes
- Payment platform updated. This release moves to a newer version of our Stripe Terminal payment software, including updated handling of payment authorizations. No action needed on your end.
🐛 Fixes
Issues resolved in this release.
Cash, tips & loyalty
- Cash payments no longer trigger the credit card flow. Choosing cash previously started the credit card payment path by mistake. Cash now routes correctly.
- Order total stays correct after claiming points. The order total no longer mismatches once loyalty points are claimed.
- Claiming points returns to the barista view. After a patron claims points, the order status now switches back to the barista screen as expected.
- Rewards can't be applied without a linked patron. The reward selector is no longer available when no patron is linked to the order, which was causing failed orders and errors.
Card readers & payment case
- Reader no longer hangs after a required update. Fixes the card reader getting stuck following a forced reader software update.
- Updates that didn't actually install no longer report success. In some cases the app reported "update complete" while the reader stayed on its old firmware — and the prompt came back the next day. The app now correctly recognizes when nothing was installed and automatically retries through a reconnect, which is the path that actually installs the firmware.
- A failed update no longer starts an install later without warning. Previously a failed attempt could leave an install queued up, which could then begin a roughly 10-minute firmware write on a later connection with no prompt — potentially mid-service. That can no longer happen.
- Update status is now accurate after a failed attempt. The patron-facing device no longer reports "up to date" while an update is still outstanding, and "Check for update" now checks the live reader connection rather than a stale view of the firmware.
- Update timeouts report the real reason. Timeout windows were retuned so a slow update reports what actually happened instead of a generic "lost connection to the patron-facing device" message.
- Update dialog appears in the right place. The reader update dialog no longer opens behind the settings screens, and no longer reappears every time you navigate to Settings.
- Payment case setup no longer shows an error when the reader is connected. Fixes M2 payment case setup landing on an error screen despite a working connection.
- Reader pairing list scrolls properly. When more readers are found than fit on screen, the list now scrolls instead of overflowing.
Patron-facing device
- No more false "disconnected reader" icon. The patron-facing device no longer shows the disconnected reader icon while the reader is actually connected.
- No more hang after a canceled payment. The patron-facing device no longer freezes when a payment is canceled from the barista device.
Orders, discounts & staff
- Split payments handle order failures gracefully. If order creation fails mid-split-payment, the flow no longer gets stuck.
- Barista discounts can't exceed 100%. Fixes the percentage input allowing invalid discount amounts.
- Manager force clock-out takes effect immediately. Baristas are now clocked out instantly instead of staying clocked in until the page is refreshed.
- Outstanding-amount screen no longer appears when it shouldn't. It now only shows within the relevant flow.
- Real-time order updates are no longer missed. Events are now sent only after the POS has fully connected, preventing dropped live updates.
- Order creation retries automatically on failure, with improved error handling.
Stability
- A round of crash and freeze fixes across PIN entry, closing the till, till reports, the paired printer screen, mark-all-as-done, the patron-facing tip screen, and the purchase card — resolving crashes and stuck states reported in these areas.
📋 Known Issue
On rare occasions the patron-facing screen may briefly display raw technical text in a banner if the USB connection blips. This is a pre-existing issue, is cosmetic only, and does not affect payments or orders. Our engineering team is tracking it for a future release.
