How to Mark a Shift Tip Exempt for POS

With the latest POS update, employees can now easily mark shifts as "Tip Exempt" at the register.

Employees now have the ability to toggle their tip eligibility status during clock-in or clock-out. Employees performing non-tip-eligible tasks like inventory management, prep work, or cleaning can opt-out of tip allocation at clock-in and/or create a separate shift to separate tip-eligible from non-tip-eligible work. Similarly, they can opt back into the tip pool at clock-out if they’ve transitioned to customer-facing duties.

To create a tip exempt shift on the register:

Go into the joe app on the barista facing tablet and navigate to the barista clock in page

Click on your barista profile to clock in and input your PIN

If the work that will be completed is tip exempt, click the toggle where it says Tip Exempt to ensure tips are not allocated for the shift.

Important: If you need to complete tip exempt tasks (inventory, admin work) after finishing a barista shift, be sure to clock out of the barista shift where you were collecting tips and then create a new shift where you have the tip exempt toggle on. This will ensure tips are not still being allocated to your shift when you are doing tip exempt work, but your full work hours will be documented in the system.
