In coffee shops, especially where gift card usage is high, split payment is a critical feature. It allows you to:
-
Process a gift card with a partial balance.
-
Accept two different payment methods for a single transaction.
Key Things to Know
- Only one loyalty customer can use their loyalty balance per transaction.
- Tip selection must happen before splitting a payment.
- The total transaction is processed as one sale.
- Only one receipt is printed, even if multiple payment methods are used.
- For credit/debit card splits, a minimum transfer amount of $0.50 is required.
How to Process a Split Payment
- On the payment screen, select "Split" as the payment method.
- Tap "Split #1", and enter the amount the customer wants to pay.
- Choose the payment method (e.g., Credit Card, Gift Card, Loyalty Balance).
- For additional splits, repeat steps 2–3 for Split #2, Split #3, etc.
Special Scenario: Gift Card Split
When a customer swipes a physical gift card with insufficient funds:
- Select Gift Card as the payment method and swipe the card.
- A pop-up will appear showing the available balance and prompting you to continue with split payment.
- The system will:
- Pre-fill the gift card balance under Split #1.
- Pre-select the gift card as the payment method.
- Prompt you to confirm and Pay.
- The remaining balance will automatically populate under Split #2, where you can select a different payment method to complete the transaction.
Refund Process for Split Payments
- Finding the Order: Orders paid using split payments will show "Multiple Payments" under the payment method.
- Full Refund:
- If refunding 100% of the order, the system will allocate the refund back to the original payment methods.
- Partial Refund:
- Partial refunds are limited to two options based on the original payment methods. Cash or Loyalty Balance
-
- If no customer account is linked to the order, a partial refund can only be processed as cash.
