How to set up joe POS

Welcome to joe Point of Sale - the POS system built specifically for the coffee industry. Before you're ready to take both in person and mobile orders, follow along these three steps to set up your hardware.

1 - Download joe POS & Pair Device

First step is to download the joe merchant app to your iPad that will be used for your in-person POS. 

  1. Connect the iPad to your shop's reliable wifi source.
  2. Update settings to enable 'Stay awake': 
    1. In iPad Settings > Go to "Display & Brightness"  > Auto Lock > Choose "Never" 
  3. Download joe Merchant PLUS app from the iOS App Store on to your POS device
  4. Open joe Merchant PLUS, and Get Started
  5. Sign in to your joe merchant account with your email address and password
  6. Select the store you want to pair this device to, then name the device 
  7. You will be given two different modes to choose from:
    1. Point of Sale Barista Facing
    2. Point of Sale Consumer Facing (joe POS only)
  8. Select Point-of-Sale Barista Facing followed by Continue
  9. This device is now set up to take in-person orders and accept mobile orders. Take the tour to get to know the new joe Merchant PLUS

2 - Sync consumer loyalty tablet

This tablet, will face your customers. It will show customers their order ticket, they will be able to add a tip, and will collect their phone number to earn loyalty points.

  1. Plug in, power on device and connect to reliable wifi source
  2. Update settings to enable 'Stay awake': 
    1. In Settings > About tablet > Software information > Continuously tap "Build number" until you see "Developer mode turned on" > Return back to Settings > tap the new Developer options at bottom of screen > toggle on "Stay awake"
  3. Download the new joe merchant PLUS on Google Play store on to your consumer facing loyalty tablet
  4. Open joe Merchant PLUS, and Get Started
  5. Sign in to your joe merchant account with your email address and password
  6. Select the store you want to pair this device to, then name the device 
  7. You will be given two different modes to choose from:
    1. Point of Sale Barista Facing
    2. Point of Sale Consumer Facing 
  8. Select Point of Sale Consumer Facing followed by Continue.
  9. This device is now set up as your Consumer Facing Loyalty device

3 - Connect Bluetooth card reader

To set up your bluetooth card reader to your POS iPad:

  1. Ensure the bluetooth on your iPad is turned ON.
  2. Plug in bluetooth card reader cradle to reliable power source. Turn ON the bluetooth Stripe Reader M2 card reader by pressing and releasing the power button. The status LEDs turn on and the reader beeps twice.
    1. Note: The reader will wait for a Bluetooth connection for five minutes before turning off.
  3. On joe, tap the Gear icon on the left sidebar to open Settings followed by the Card Readers tab.
  4. Tap Add Card Reader. The iPad will search for the bluetooth card reader and request to pair with it. Select Pair in the bluetooth pop up window. 
  5. When the reader connects to the joe POS app on your device, the status LEDs on top of the reader flash four times. After connecting, the first status light begins flashing at five second intervals. 
  6. After paired, we recommend checking for an update and completing a test charge on the card reader. 

4 - Enable Till Management

We partner with Star Micronics bluetooth printers and cash drawers. If you are not set up a Star Micronics printer and cash drawer combination, baristas must manually open the cash drawer for cash transactions. To connect your Star Micronics cash drawer, follow these instructions to automatically open when baristas tap the "Open Cash Drawer" button.

  1. Still in joe Settings, select "Features" tab. 
  2. Toggle ON "Enable till feature". 
  3. Select Back to take you to the main POS screen. You now have a Till Management tab at the bottom of the left-hand menu bar. Tap it and follow these instructions to Open or Close your till.
